When communicating with an IoT device, transmission speed of messages is becoming increasingly important to achieve a pleasant user experience. This is especially true for media that imposes significant constraints on the throughput of data between nodes (e.g. Bluetooth, Infrared). This talk introduces Google’s Protocol Buffer format as an effective alternative to more common data encodings such as JSON or XML, and discusses its benefits for heterogeneous environments like the ones we find in IoT, where platforms of all shapes and sizes need to agree upon a common language for sharing information.
